Muriel Kneeshaw is a sculptor, born and raised in Canada who has resided in New York City since 1966. After moving to New York. she completed a Doctorate of Education at Columbia University and taught public health nursing for thirty years, all the while pursuing sculpture as a venue for self expression. Currently, she sculpts in her home studio and at The Art Students League of New York.
In the past, Muriel worked primarily in welding steel and soldering brass to portray the movements of figures and forms filled with light. From 2008 to 2022, she sculpted in wax and casting in bronze. Using figurative forms and movements, she enjoyed exploring ways of expressing emotions and reactions to the experiences of our time. For a period of time, the focus of her work was on a series depicting the emerging of women in today’s culture and political scene. At the present time, she is sculpting in stone.
In New York, Muriel has shown her work in numerous group shows. Alice Shapiro (Artspeak, 1986) described her small-steel sculptures as “humorous and psychological,” whereas Will Grant (Artspeak, 1985) described them as “rhythmic abstraction.” Fellow sculptors describe them as whimsical. Muriel has shown her work in a Two-Person Show at Synchronicity Space, and in 2013, she received The Rhoda Sherbell Award for Sculpture given by Allied Artists of America Inc.
